My Ireland: Claddagh Ring

Irish Claddagh Ring

Today I want to tell you about my favourite piece of Irish jewellery - The Claddagh Ring. This traditional Irish ring has a unique design that symbolises love (heart), friendship (hands) and loyalty (crown). Its name comes from the name of a fishing village in Galway where the maker of this famous ring came from according to the legend: in around the 17th century a silversmith from Claddagh village was captured by Algerian Corsairs and sold into slavery to a Moorish goldsmith, for whom he worked for many years until he was released and returned home with a special ring that he made for his girlfriend.

There are several ways to wear it:

1. If you are single and looking for love - wear it on the right hand with the heart pointing out (the tip of the heart towards the fingertips);
2. If you are already in a relationship - wear it on the right hand with the heart pointing in (the tip of the heart towards the wrist);
3. If you are engaged - wear it on the left hand with the heart pointing out (the tip of the heart towards the fingertips);
4. If you have found your true love and joined your hearts in marriage - wear it on the left hand with the heart pointing in (the tip of the heart towards the wrist).

When in Ireland make sure to visit Carrol's Gifts and Souvenirs shop (you can also shop online) to buy yourself a Claddagh ring, or go to any jeweller's for a fancy expensive ring if you are getting married or engaged.
